Summary:Is life about how much stuff you have or how popular you are? Is it about being comfy or happy? Is it about how many good things you’ve done? We live in a world where people tend to focus a lot on themselves. There are even times when we think we are better than others without even realizing it. If we’re not careful, we too may end up focusing too much on ourselves. This can cause us to become prideful and puffed up. Sometimes it leads people to brag about everything they have or everything they have done. One thing we always need to be reminded of is that life isn’t all about us. We must also remember that God is the one who gave us all the good things we have in the first place. Without him we would be nothing. This month, we are going to talk about how much pride can hurt us. We will also learn the value of honor and humility and how it helps us.
Memory Verse:
If you think you are better than others, when you really aren't, you are wrong. (Galatians 6:3)
Main Point:
“Don’t get so puffed up!”
Week 1: Arrogance Puffs Up
Today we are going to talk about arrogance. If you think you are the coolest thing around and everybody else isn’t as good as you then you probably struggle with Arrogance! Arrogance is a form of pride, and it usually means you think you are better than someone else. This kind of attitude can cause you to become puffed up, thinking you’re a hot shot. As we read the Bible today, we are going to see that God doesn’t appreciate people who are arrogant. Don’t let arrogance get the best of you! Overcome arrogance with humility!
Week 2: Knowledge Puffs Up
Today we are going to talk about knowledge, and even though knowledge is a good thing, too much knowledge can cause us to be puffed up – thinking we are smarter than others and sometimes even smarter than God. Have you ever heard the term “Know-It-All” or “Smarty Pants?” Some of the Pharisees in the Bible acted this way. They thought they knew all the right things to do and the right things to say, but they were puffed up with too much knowledge. If we’re not careful we could end up this way too. You might think you know it all… been there, done that… but compared to God we know nothing. God doesn’t appreciate people who act like they know it all. Don’t let knowledge puff you up! Imagine this… If we knew everything then there would be no reason to go to God.
Week 3: Humility Is the Cure
Today we will be focusing on the word humility and what it truly means. Humility keeps us from getting “puffed up.” Humility isn’t thinking less of yourself… it’s thinking less about yourself. You are very valuable and important to God there’s no doubt about that! But we have to remember that life is not all about us! We must be careful not to become conceited, stuck up or puffed up! When all we focus on is ourselves, we will have a spirit of pride. When we focus less on ourselves we will have a spirit of humility.
Week 4: Honoring Others
Today’s lesson is all about honor. Honor is a lot like humility, only it goes one step further… honor means to think of others more than you do yourself. It means to put others first and to treat them how we would want to be treated. So who should we honor? God asks us to honor our parents, our brothers and sisters, our leaders, our teachers, our peers… as a matter of fact, He asks us to honor all people! When we honor these different people in our lives, we are honoring God! Also, when we honor others God rewards us with honor in return!
Week 5: Glory Belongs to God
Today we will be talking about the glory of God. The word glory means something of great beauty or magnificence or splendor. When I think of glory, I think of something GREAT. God is great and mighty and his glory is greater than anything. When we give glory to God it simply means we want to give Him the highest praise and the highest honor. It means we think less about getting attention for ourselves and we want God to get all of the attention. When we glorify God, He is pleased and honors us in return.
